What is Therapeutic Touch™?

Therapeutic Touch™ is a non-invasive therapy developed in the early 1970's by Dolores Krieger, PH.D., R.N. and Dora Kunz. It is a healing practice based on the conscious use of the hands to direct or modulate, for therapeutic purposes, universal energy that activates the human body's natural healing process and assists in rebalancing it. The basis for this therapy is outlined in the Basic Assumptions below.

This therapy does not require direct touch.

The Practitioner, acting as a facilitator, provides the client with the opportunity to regain a balanced energy flow. For Practitioners, "doing" TT is more than just movement and response, it is a way of living, a philosophy and it moves through our lives bringing us to a greater understanding and contact with our world.

Basic Assumptions of Therapeutic Touch

  • Human beings are open, complex energy systems.

  • In a state of health, life energy flows freely through the organism in a balanced, symmetrical manner.

  • Human beings are capable of transformation.

  • Healing is an instrinsic movement towards order that occurs in living organisms, and can be facilitated by practitioners. Life energy follows the intent to heal.

How does TT work?

The underlying direction of the Basic Assumptions concludes that energy fields can be disrupted by an injury, operation or emotional upset. Balance can return when the energy field is introduced to a healing methodology. The Practitioner, having received proper training, can

  • determine where the block(s) exist (through assessment),

  • then unruffles or smooths out the blocked areas reminding the field of its directional flow (through unruffling) and

  • to complete a session, if required, the Practitioner directs Universal (not personal) energy into the areas that have become depleted and reconnecting it to the ground (grounding).

Each session follows these basis steps.

Therapeutic Touch™ is NOT able to diagnose illness, nor is it meant to take the place of sound medical advice. Treatments do not deplete the effectiveness of medical treatments or medications. If your physician has any concerns about you receiving Therapeutic Touch™ treatments while under their care, please feel you can direct them to this website or contact us in person.

What is Universal energy?

Universal or Life Force energy is the natural energy that flows through all living organisms and is the purest form of energy known. This is the same energy referred to and used in healing modalities such as acupuncture and Ayurvedic medicine. Thus, as practitioners work from a center of compassion and caring, they are directing the universal energy through the act of intention.

What might be some of the benefits of Therapeutic Touch™?

Listed below are some of the benefits of this energy healing modality which have been documented in research studies, but more importantly has been observed by Practitioners and enjoyed by recipients.

The origins of Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch™ was developed by Dolores Kreiger,Ph.D., R.N. and Dora Kunz and was first taught in 1972 to some of Dr. Kreiger's graduate student nurses. Since that time, TT has been introduced to many Canadian hospitals, is increasingly more a common part of nursing instruction, has received the scrutiny of research, and has met international acceptance in many countries. In this time it has become clear that any one can learn TT and world-wide practitioners include a variety of professional clinicians and lay people.
